Background
The special stamps Chinese New Year Greetings, issued by China Post on January 10, 2017, represent the third set in the Chinese New Year Greetings special stamp series. The full set consists of one stamp with a face value of 1.20 yuan. Designed by Wu Guanying, the stamp incorporates Mongolian Lunar New Year folk custom elements for the first time. Its main scene features the cartoon characters "Huanhuan" and "Xixi" wearing traditional Mongolian costumes and presenting khata. With a background depicting snow-covered land, yurts and auspicious cloud patterns, the stamp embodies the theme of "great national unity". Coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the inscriptions on the stamp margins were written by Ouyang Zhongshi, and the stamps were printed by Henan Post and Telecommunications Printing House. The main part of the stamp showcases two Mongolian teenagers, "Huanhuan" and "Xixi", who stand on the grassland covered with snow, dressed in traditional blue Mongolian robes and holding white khatas that symbolize good fortune. The composition of visual elements includes the following:
Yurt clusters in the background, showing the living scenes of nomadic ethnic groups
Auspicious cloud patterns surrounding the main characters, enhancing the festive atmosphere
A couplet reading "Auspicious khata presented to greet the Spring Festival; Happy flowers blooming towards the sun", displayed in the form of a screen wall
Traditional Spring Festival symbols such as lanterns and firecrackers adopted as the marginal patterns
As the third installment in the Chinese New Year Greetings special stamp series, this set inherits the core design framework of the first two sets:
Maintaining the issuance format of one stamp per set
Continuing to use the cartoon images of "Huanhuan" and "Xixi"
Adhering to the festive color palette for the Spring Festival
Adopting the standard inscriptions written by Ouyang Zhongshi
In terms of color application, it follows the tradition of the series, with red and orange as the dominant tones to highlight the festive vibe, while creating a contrast between warm and cool colors through the indigo costumes and white background. The stamp measures 40×30 millimeters, and the offset printing technology ensures the exquisite detail of the patterns.
